No School February 13th and February 20th.

Dear Tiger Students and Parents,

Welcome to the new upcoming school year!  We are excited about having you as part of the Tierra Bonita Elementary School community and are committed to providing the best education opportunities possible.  We all look forward to an outstanding year.  The 2011-2012 school year will be full of learning, enjoying school activities, and developing life-long friendships.  But for this school year to be successful, you need to be an active participant.  Our primary goal is, of course, the academic success of our students.  We have high academic standards and want each of our students to meet these standards.  For the parents, we ask that you become an active participant in your child’s education.  Your participation is the single most critical factor in his/her achievement.  It promotes student attendance, focuses on their studies, and reinforces the importance of achievement in education.  Parents, as partners, with the school send a clear message to their students that learning matters.   As always, we encourage you and your student to be actively involved in daily learning and for parents to keep up with important activities and school events.  The more involved you are, the more you will enjoy and gain from your time at Tierra Bonita.  One secret to a successful school year is to set good routines right from the beginning.  Here are some tips to consider:

Children benefit from a schedule they can depend on- one that includes definite times for play, homework, meals, and sleep.  Continue to share reading with your children even after they can read by themselves.  It often contributes to a continued positive relationship and lively conversation.  Take a few minutes every day to look at what your child brings home from school.  Talk about their school work together.  Set a regular time to do homework.  Choose a familiar, consistent place (sometimes the kitchen table works well).  Include the basics of reading, reviewing math facts, memorizing spelling lists, etc.  Recognize your child’s efforts to improve their skills.  Always remember positive affirmations, even if they are small improvements.

Your commitment to your child’s education is such a great way to start the new school year.  For your convenience, your child will be bringing home a “shortened version of our Student- Parent Handbook.”  (The complete version can be picked up in our office or found on our website.)

Sincerely,

Ms. Christa Waldvogel
Principal
